Leeds United are preparing a £7million summer bid for Reading midfielder John Swift, Football Insider understands.

A club source has told Football Insider that Leeds are ready to test Reading's resolve to hang on to the England Under-21 international with an offer in the forthcoming window.

The Championship promotion hopefuls are ready to match the £7m spent last summer on Patrick Bamford, their most expensive signing since their Premier League days.

Leeds' pursuit of Swift is irrespective of whether they are in the Premier League or the English second tier next season as manager Marcelo Bielsa regards him as a player capable of thriving in either league.

The 23-year-old has been one of Reading's shining lights during a difficult campaign, scoring six goals and laying on three assists in 37 appearances in all competition.

The former Chelsea player, who graduated from the Premier League giants academy ranks before going on to make just a single appearance for them, has a contract at the Royals that runs until the summer of 2022.

He has also had spells at Brentford, Rotherham United and Swindon Town.
