Kevin Phillips has tipped Thiago Alcantara to potentially replace Jordan Henderson after the Liverpool captain picked up an injury against Brighton.
The former Sunderland and West Brom striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested that Jurgen Klopp may need to replace Henderson depending on the extent of his knee injury.
Henderson was substituted after 80 minutes following a collision with Yves Bissouma and today had a scan on his knee.
With the new season to commence shortly after the completion of the current, the Reds may be forced to start their title defence without their captain.
The Athletic‘s James Pearce has revealed that Bayern Munich’s Thiago is keen on a move to Anfield this summer and Phillips suggested that he would be a fitting replacement.
When asked by Football Insider for his reaction to the England international’s injury, Phillips said: “Henderson has been amazing.
“He has picked up an injury and Klopp said it is not a good one. That is not good and only time will tell what will happen there.
“The next season not that far away anyone coming into that area, maybe a Thiago, could slot in quite nicely.
“There is competition there but these top players do not mind that. That is what brings out the best in them and he is certainly a player, if called upon, would help.
“Thiago is phenomenal.”
Thiago is keen to move to the Premier League and would relish the opportunity to work with Jurgen Klopp. Down to the final year of his contract, he would be available for around £30 million, says @JamesPearceLFC 🔴 pic.twitter.com/4pihdJ9zha

Klopp, when quizzed on the potential arrival of the Spain international, said: “Thiago Alcantara is a really good player.
“I like him a lot but that’s all I have to say about that.”
