Exclusive: London club submitting £8m bid in dramatic Celtic striker development

Brentford are readying a new £8million push to beat Celtic to the signing of Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney, Football Insider can reveal.

The Londoners have been consigned to the Championship next season after suffering play-off heartache on Tuesday and are aiming to bounce back with the 24-year-old as their spearhead.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Brentford are willing to structure a deal that could rise to £8m including add-ons.

They are set to submit a new bid after falling short with a £5m move for Toney last month.

The Bees face a major battle to hang on to their star striker Ollie Watkins after Tuesday’s defeat means a clause has kicked in on his contract allowing him to leave if a an £18m bid is tabled.

That is likely given the stampede of interest from multiple clubs, with Football Insider revealing last night that Aston Villa are preparing a near-£50m double swoop for Watkins and Said Benrahma.

The door is still open for Toney’s many suitors, who include Bournemouth and West Brom as well as Celtic and the New York Red Bulls.

Rangers had also been monitoring him closely but have signed two new strikers this week in Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten on four-year deals.

Toney has made up his mind to quit London Road after a stunning 26-goal campaign.

Toney was on fire before the March lockdown, netting 24 league goals – nine more than anyone else – among 26 in all competitions this season.

Since signing from Newcastle United in 2018, the front man has netted 49 goals in 94 matches as well as supplied 15 assists.

In other news, Celtic are restructuring their bid for Albian Ajeti after a new twist following fresh talks this week.
