Luton Town have made an approach to sign Bristol City defender Bailey Wright, Football Insider understands.

A number of clubs are chasing the 27-year-old's signature in this month's transfer window with the defender down the pecking order at Ashton Gate and out of contract at the end of the season.

A source at Luton has told Football Insider that the Hatters are among the clubs to have made contact with Bristol Rovers by enquiring about Wright's availability.

Luton are in the market for defensive reinforcements this month as they look to improve their squad as they bid to secure survival in the Championship.

The Hatters are rock bottom of the Championship table and have the worst defensive record in the league, having conceded 56 goals in 26 games.

It is believed that The Robins could cash-in on Wright this month rather than risk allowing him to run down his contract and leave for free next summer.

The centre-back has only played three times for Bristol City in the Championship this season with Tomas Kalas, Nathan Baker, Ashley Williams and Taylor Moore all ahead of him in Lee Johnson's plans.

Wright, who has 24 caps for Australia, began his career at Preston North End before moving to Ashton Gate in January 2017.

Johnson's team are faring well without relying on Wright as they currently sit 11th in the Championship.

The Robins are only three points off sixth-placed Swansea City, although they did lose their last league outing 4-0 to Brentford.
