Frank McAvennie insisted Steven Gerrard would not quit Rangers for Birmingham City and claimed he is totally motivated to stop 10-in-a-row.

The former Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the former Liverpool captain and his coaching staff are destined for the top but not until they have tried to stop their Old Firm rivals winning 10-in-a-row.

Gerrard signed a two-year contract extension in December which will keep him tied down to Ibrox until 2024.

Football Insider revealed last week that Championship side Birmingham City had made an approach for the Gers boss with their current manager Pep Clotet departing at the end of the season.

McAvennie hailed the job Gerrard, Gary McAllister and Michael Beale had done since moving to Ibrox.

“It would need to be Premier League to tempt Gerrard,” he told Football Insider.

“I thought it was a gamble when he went to Rangers because he was learning his trade. But he has made them a better team.

“They are still behind Celtic which is understandable because Celtic have the money. The chairman is not going to give money to Stevie for players that will sit on the bench.

“I think Stevie will definitely want to stay and stop the 10. That is his motivation.

“They have done ever so well in Europe and that has made Rangers money. I think they will go far in the game, Gerrard, Gary Mac and Michael Beale.

“For Stevie Gerrard to leave Rangers it would need to be for a Premier League side.”

In other Rangers news, Noel Whelan has told Football Insider that striker’s comment are a “come and get me plea” to Gerrard.
