Exclusive: Mills fires warning at Aston Villa over reported pursuit of 'Exceptional' player

Danny Mills fired a warning at Aston Villa over their pursuit of Trabzonspor forward Daniel Sturridge.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the ex-England international admitted that he thought the Villans should only consider signing Sturridge on a pay as you play basis.

It was recently reported that the Villans were keen on signing Sturridge even though Trabzonspor hope he sticks with them.

Mills explained that he thought the former England international had previously proven to be exceptional and was a fabulous goalscorer.

However, the ex-England defender admitted Sturridge wouldn’t come cheaply and noted there must be a reason why some many top clubs have binned him.

When asked if Sturridge is worth the Villans signing, Mills told Football Insider: “I think it would have to be on a pay as you play basis, an Andy Carroll type deal.

“We know he had a couple of exceptional seasons, he’s undoubtedly got a lot of talent.

“He’s a fabulous goalscorer, you’ve got to get him on the pitch and keep him there.

“A player of that ilk you’ll have to pay top dollar for as he isn’t going to come cheap.

“And it’s a massive gamble, he’s been to a lot of top clubs and he’s been let go by a lot of top clubs, there has to be a reason.

“A lot of top managers have said yep, but not for me and you have to look into that and think what is not quite right about him.

“Why isn’t he on the pitch more often?”

The 30-year-old forward joined Trabzonspor in the summer following the expiration of his Liverpool contract and has scored seven goals in 13 appearances for the Turkish side so far.

Sturridge has played a total of 218 times in the Premier League during his career, scoring 77 goals in the process.
