Tottenham are plotting a shock late move for Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke as their forward pursuit takes a new twist, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The London club have seen multiple moves for a proven front man fall through but are very keen to land a proven goalscorer in the last seven days of the window.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that manager Jose Mourinho has now given the green light to a swoop for Benteke.
That represents something of a surprise as the Belgium international, 29, has a poor scoring record for Palace and is not a regular starter for them.
But Mourinho is a long-term admirer of the forward and previously tried to sign him when he was in charge of Man United.
Palace are inviting offers for Benteke as they look to trim their wage bill before the window shuts.
Spurs have seen moves for Alexander Sorloth – who joined RB Leipzig – and Napoli’s Arkadiusz Milik collapse this window.
Now they have set their sights on lower profile forwards who they deem to be more realistic targets in the final week of the window.
The Londoners are working on multiple different deals as they look to present Mourinho with the senior striker he has made clear he wants by next Monday’s cut-off.
Benteke has scored 72 goals from 226 Premier League appearances for Palace, Liverpool and Aston Villa.
He also has a fine record for Belgium, with his 37 appearances yielding 15 goals.
However, Benteke has not fared so well at Palace, scoring 23 times in 116 matches and failing to make the starting XI for any of their three league matches so far this season.
