Darren Bent claims that Jose Mourinho’s tactics were to blame after Tottenham suffered a 3-1 loss to Sheffield United on Thursday evening.
The former Spurs and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has blasted the Lilywhites’ defending and suggested that the problems stem from the way they were set up by the Portuguese boss.
The Blades stormed to a 3-0 lead, with Sander Berge, Lys Mousset and Oli McBurnie hitting the back of the net, before Harry Kane scored a late consolation goal.
Bent believes Mourinho does not have the players he needs to implement the football he wants to play and that his tactics let Spurs down on Thursday.
Asked if Mourinho got his tactics wrong against the Blades, Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah, I agree – Mourinho wants to play a certain way but if you’ve not got the players to play a certain way, it’s difficult.
“Defensively they were so poor yesterday, some of the goals they conceded – Mousset’s goal he’s got the whole six-yard box to himself, it was really, really poor defending.
“It really was very, very, very basic and poor defending. Mourinho, all he’s got to do is try see out this season and then start again next season but it really was not a good look.”
Spurs currently sit ninth in the Premier League table, two points behind the Blades in seventh.
Their hopes of Champions League football next season hang in the balance, with fourth-placed Chelsea nine points ahead and six games to play.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED the Lilywhites have made a move to sign a 24-year-old defender.
