Serie A side Napoli have ambushed Arsenal and triggered the £23million (€25million) release clause of RB Salzburg midfielder Dominik Szobozlai, Football Insider understands.

As previously revealed by this site, the Gunners made multiple bids to sign the 19-year-old last summer and held talks with his camp both in January and ahead of the summer transfer window.

However, a source in Italy has told Football Insider that Napoli have stolen a march over their rivals and tabled an offer matching the Hungary international’s eight-figure purchase clause at the Austrian outfit.

Szoboszlai, who joined Salzburg from FC Liefering back in January 2018, has caught the eye of top sides all across Europe after his impressive attacking returns this season.

The teenager, who can play on either wing or through the middle, has netted 10 times and contributed 17 assists across all competitions this season.

Half of his goals have come since the restart of the Austrian Bundesliga, with his performances helping Salzburg to their seventh successive league title.

As well as long-term admirers Arsenal, Premier League sides Wolves and Leicester City have been credited with an interest in the Hungarian ace, while AC Milan and RB Leipzig are among his suitors on the continent.

Szoboszlai made his international debut as an 18-year-old back in March 2019 against Slovakia and has missed just two games for the national side since breaking into the squad.

He has already tested himself against the best in England, having played against the newly-crowned Premier League champions Liverpool in the Champions League group stages earlier this season.

In other Arsenal news, former Premier League referee Keith Hackett has ripped into a Gunner with a “very dangerous” approach.
