Exclusive: Norwich City beat Brighton to 6-figure Riley signing

Norwich City have agreed a £250,000 deal to sign Bolton Wanderers midfielder Regan Riley, Football Insider understands.

The 18-year-old attacking midfielder has emerged as one of the League Two outfit’s brightest prospects and caught the eye of Premier League side Brighton this month.

A recruitment source told Football Insider the Canaries have won the race for Riley’s capture, with the teenager set to sign a three-year deal at Carrow Road.

The teenager, who made his professional debut as a 16-year-old against Tranmere Rovers last season, has been on the fringes of the first-team at Bolton this term.

He started and played 53 minutes in the League Trophy tie against Shrewsbury Town, while he also featured as an unused substitute against Newcastle’s under-23s and Grimsby Town.

Born in Bolton and a boyhood fan of the club, Riley joined Wanderers’ academy as a nine-year-old and has caught the eye of both his coaches and the scouts of other clubs further up the Football League.

He is set to join a Norwich City side pushing for an immediate return to the Premier League after suffering relegation last season.

The Canaries currently sit top of the Championship table, six points clear of second-placed Swansea City.

Manager Daniel Farke has not been afraid to call upon teenagers this season, with Tyrese Omotoye, Andrew Omobamidele and Josh Martin all having featured in 10 or more matchday squads in the Championship.

Meanwhile, the likes of Oliver Skipp, Max Aarons, Przemyslaw Placheta and Jacob Lungi Sörensen – all under the age of 22 – have made 17 or more league appearances to date.
