Celtic would be signing an “outstanding prospect” if they could prise Joe Gelhardt away from Wigan Athletic this summer, according to Alex Bruce.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Kilmarnock man has revealed how hugely impressed he was with the youngster after playing alongside him in training at the Latics.
It is understood the Latics had previously set a £5million price tag on the teenager’s head but that number is expected to tumble due to the club’s financial woes.
Bruce, who played with the young attacker during his time at Wigan, has lifted the lid on just how exciting a prospect Gelhardt is.
“Celtic is obviously a massive club so it’s enough for anybody to think about when a club like Celtic comes in for you,” Bruce told Football Insider.
“I played with Joe at Wigan when he was a young kid coming through and he’s an outstanding prospect, I have to say. He’s a tenacious young centre-forward and he’s a good finisher as well.
“He’s got a bright future ahead of him, that’s for sure. I know people at Wigan have high hopes for him. He’ll be a good signing for someone because he’s got an exciting future and he’s got good attributes.”
Gelhardt has played 20 times for Wigan’s senior side after breaking through the academy ranks last season.
He has made a total of 17 first-team appearances this season and his only goal came in a 2-2 draw with Hull back in September.
