Preston North End have today agreed a fee of over £1.5million for Ben Whiteman with Doncaster Rovers, Football Insider can reveal.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Whiteman will be granted permission to discuss personal terms with Preston.

The 24-year-old was left out of Rovers' matchday squad on Saturday after reportedly having his head turned by a Championship move.

Whiteman has not played for the south Yorkshire outfit since before Christmas after testing positive for coronavirus.

He could become North End's fourth signing of the January transfer window after the arrival of Jayson Molumby, Ched Evans and Daniel Iversen all on loan.

Alex Neil is in the market for midfield reinforcements with both Ben Pearson's and Daniel Johnson's contracts expiring at the end of the season.

With Johnson operating in an attacking midfield role, Whiteman could serve as a direct replacement for Pearson who usually sits at the base of midfield.

The Sheffield United academy graduate has played over 150 times for Doncaster and was named club captain in August 2019.

He has not missed a minute of League One action this term and has found the net eight times in 23 games across all competitions.
