Kevin Phillips has been shocked by the impact of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg at Tottenham this season.

The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, admitted that he did not expect the 25-year-old to take Jose Mourinho’s side to the next level after his “surprise signing” in August.

Hojbjerg put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Spurs after a £15million fee was agreed with Southampton for his services.

The Denmark international has since been ever-present for Jose Mourinho’s side in the Premier League this season, helping them to second in the table after eight games.

Phillips heaped praise on Hojbjerg having initially questioned his arrival.

“For me that was a surprise signing,” he told Football Insider.

“You do see it every now and then. I do not think I was the only one raised an eyebrow at that signing.

“Even Spurs supporters must have thought, ‘Who have we signed? What are we signing here? Are we really signing a player who will take us to the next level?’

“But credit to the player. I have watched him a lot this season and he is a quality midfielder.

“He surprised me so I take my hat off to him. You have to hold your hands up sometimes because you make judgements and you get it wrong. I certainly hold my hands up and say I have got it wrong.”
