Exclusive: Significant new Edouard development leaves Celtic in a hole - Pundit

Celtic are in a major hole and have their work cut out keeping Odsonne Edouard this summer as he stalls on signing a new contract.

That is according to ex-Scotland and Rangers defender Alan Hutton, who is a big admirer of the hot favourite to win the Scottish player of the year award.

Edouard has emerged as the most in-demand player north of the border during an outstanding campaign in which he has been linked with multiple Premier League clubs and touted for a £30million-plus transfer.

Celtic are keen to extend Edouard’s contract, which runs until 2022, but, as revealed by Football Insider this week, the French striker’s camp have been reluctant to enter into “serious” negotiations in a strong hint he is eyeing a move.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hutton is in no doubt the 22-year-old striker will be on the target list of multiple elite clubs.

“Edouard is technically gifted and I think Celtic will have to do as much as they can to hold onto him because I’m sure there’ll be teams looking at him, whether it be the Premier League or foreign clubs,” he said. “It’s going to be a tough ask to keep hold of him.”

Celtic could potential sell Edouard at an even higher fee than their two previous record sales, Kieran Tierney (£25million) last summer and Moussa Dembele (£19million) in the 2018 main window.

Edouard signed permanently for Celtic in 2018 for a club-record £9million after initially making a big impression during a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

His 45 Celtic appearances this season have yielded 27 goals and 19 assists while he has also banged in a remarkable 11 goals in just six France Under-21s matches.
