Exclusive: Hutton reacts as EFL club swoop to sign Rangers 21yo singled out by Gerrard
Alan Hutton has tipped Rangers midfielder Jamie Barjonas to head out on loan this summer after being singled out for praise by Steven Gerrard.
The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the 21-year-old will struggle for game time if he stays at Ibrox for the 2020/21 campaign.
Speaking to Rangers TV after their friendly win over OGC Nice, Gerrard lauded Barjonas for showing his “personality” in pre-season and insisted he would try to get the youngster more game time.
However, Hutton believes that opportunities are going to be hard to come by at Ibrox next season and suggests a loan move will be on the cards for the academy product.
As revealed by Football Insider, League Two new boys Barrow are plotting a move to sign Barjonas this summer.
“Look, it is difficult, we can’t kid ourselves – we’re going into such a crucial year for Rangers,” Hutton told Football Insider.

“It’s difficult for them to take chances but at the same time, if he goes out and proves to the manager he can handle these sorts of occasions then I don’t see why not.
“I must admit I probably think that Gerrard sees a lot of the youngsters, aside from (Nathan) Patterson probably, to probably go out on loan and get the game time that they need. They’re still so young before coming back and trying to integrate into the actual team.”
Barjonas spent the second half of the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Partick Thistle where he played five times before the season was cut short.
He has a total of nine first-team appearances under his belt for the Gers.
