'Gutted' - Exclusive: Hutton tears into Rangers teen after big transfer update

Alan Hutton has ripped into Rangers youngster Kai Kennedy after contract talks fell through due to his wage demands.

The former Gers defender and boyhood fan at Ibrox, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits it is a “gut-wrencher” that Steven Gerrard could lose a promising talent over money.

As revealed by Football Insider last week, the 18-year-old has turned down the Gers’ offer of a new contract to thrust his future into major doubt.

It is understood the teenager is holding out for more lucrative terms from an improved deal, with his last contract signed when he was a 16-year-old.

Hutton has blasted the highly-rated winger for his demands and insists he should be patient before making big-money demands.

Asked if it was a big blow for the Gers, Hutton told Football Insider: “Oh 100 per cent, even me reading it it was a bit of a blow because we expected a lot from him, we had high expectations of him breaking into the team.

“It can be a little bit annoying when you hear of reasons like that. If it’s because the player is of a certain level then okay, no problem, that’s fine but when it’s to do with money issues, at the end of the day you’re 18-years-old.

“You’ve not broken into the first team really, you’re just on the cusp of it and for things to break down over wages, it’s a bit of a gut-wrencher. It’s a shame.

“It’s a shame for Rangers as a whole to miss out on a talented player over something that’s irrelevant at the moment. If you’re as good as you think you are and as the club think you are, you’ll get there eventually, just bide your time.”

Kennedy’s one and only first-team appearance came in a nine-minute cameo against Stranraer in the Scottish Cup.

He was also left as an unused substitute against Ross County back in March.

In other Rangers news, Steven Gerrard has been tipped to sign two English league players next week.
