Exclusive: Rangers in hunt to bring player sold by Warburton in 2016 back to Ibrox

Rangers are battling several English Championship clubs to sign Livingston defender Craig Halkett, Football Insider sources understands.

Halkett was outstanding in Livingston’s 1-0 win over Rangers last weekend and his performance blew away Gers boss Steven Gerrard.

23-year-old Halkett came through the ranks at Rangers, but never made the breakthrough into the first-team and was allowed to leave for Livingston in 2016 by then-boss Mark Warburton.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Gerrard is understood to be in the market for a new central defender and he is weighing up a formal move to bring Halkett back to Ibrox after sanctioning a pursuit of the player.

Halkett’s eye-catching displays have brought him to the attention of several clubs in Scotland and England.

English Championship clubs have sent scouts to watch Halkett in action this season and they are continuing to monitor his situation at Almondvale.

Halkett is out of contract at Livingston next summer and the club are bracing themselves for offers for the captain when the transfer window reopens in January
