Exclusive: Ryan Kent tipped to smooth the path for 'Fox in the box' to join Rangers

Noel Whelan has tipped Steven Gerrard to use his Liverpool contacts to bring Rhian Brewster to Rangers next season.

The former Leeds United forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested Ryan Kent can help smooth the path for his fellow Anfield academy product to head to Ibrox.

Brewster, who turned 20 earlier this month, has spent the second-half of this season on loan at Championship side Swansea.

It has been an impressive first spell away from Liverpool for the young striker – scoring 4 goals in 11 appearances for the Swans.

As revealed by Football Insider, Leeds United are plotting a move for the England under-21 international they tried to sign in January.

When asked by Football Insider if the Gers boss may make contact with his former club about a possible loan move ahead of next season, Whelan said: “Gerrard needs striking options. Defoe is coming to the back end of his career and I think Morelos will leave.

“Brewster might be the key player that Steven thinks he can take for a year. He is a fox in the box and that is what teams want.

“Let him have that full preseason with the team and get bedded in.  With the likes of Ryan Kent, who Rhian will already know, that relationship will ease him in and of course, he will know Steven as well.

“Steven will know what kind of character and quality he is getting from the player.”

Gerrard has not been shy of using his connections with the Premier League leaders in the past having signed Ryan Kent as well as Sheyi Ojo and Ovie Ejaria on short-term deals.

Brewster is expected to be sent out on loan again by the Reds with game time for the highly-rated youngster unlikely at Anfield next season.
