Sheffield Wednesday are lining up a summer move to sign Sunderland defender Adam Matthews on a free transfer, Football Insider can reveal.

A Wednesday source has told Football Insider the club have set their sights on landing the right-back when his contract expires at the League One club next month.

Matthews has made 28 appearances in all competitions for Sunderland this season, helping them reach the League One play-offs as well as the EFL Trophy final.

The 27-year-old joined Sunderland from Celtic in 2015 when the north-east club were still in the Premier League, but he has seen time at the Stadium of Light blighted by injuries.

The full-back has a proven track record having played at the highest level in the Champions League with Celtic and also accumulated 14 caps for the Wales national side.

Sunderland would be keen to keep hold of Matthews, but they accept any chance of keeping the defender depends on whether or not they win promotion back to the Championship.

News of Matthews' availability on a free transfer has alerted a host of Championship clubs in addition to Wednesday, while there is also interest from abroad with several Dutch sides keeping tabs on the defender's situation.
