Exclusive: Sheffield Wednesday set sights on signing Cardiff City defender

Sheffield Wednesday are plotting a January move for Cardiff City defender Greg Cunningham, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The 29-year-old has entered the final six months of his contract in the Welsh capital and is set to become a free agent this summer.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Wednesday are looking to sign the left-back on an initial loan deal.

Cunningham has made just five appearances for Neil Harris’ side this season, having struggled with a hamstring problem for the majority of the campaign.

His last start came in the 2-0 defeat at Norwich City shortly before Christmas.

The versatile defender joined Cardiff in a £3.6million deal from Preston North End in July 2018 but has struggled since the move.

He spent the first half of last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers, making 10 appearances under Tony Mowbray.

Cunningham has been capped four times by the Republic of Ireland, making his debut in a 3-0 victory over Algeria in May 2010.

Bluebirds boss Neil Harris is looking to shuffle his pack in the January transfer window after a dismal run of form which has yielded just one win in the last five.

Football Insider revealed earlier today that the club are lining up a move for Crewe Alexandra defender Perry Ng this month.

Sheffield Wednesday have enjoyed a turnaround in form following the sacking of Tony Pulis last month.

Caretaker manager Neil Thompson has guided the club to back-to-back Championship wins for the first time since September, as their search for a new permanent boss continues.

In other news, Mauricio Pochettino has set his sights on signing his ‘best friend’ while at Tottenham, a player he ‘lunched with every day’ while at the club.
