Exclusive: Significant update in Celtic bid to sign Elyounoussi

Celtic are increasingly unlikely to pursue a permanent deal for Mohamed Elyounoussi this summer, Football Insider understands.

The Norway international has impressed manager Neil Lennon on his season-long loan at Parkhead from Southampton.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that the club have enquired about the cost of a full-time transfer and been told by the Premier League cost it would be £8-10million.

That is putting Elyounoussi out of the Hoops’ reach, even though there is a strong chance that asking price will drop amid football’s changed economics.

As revealed by Football Insider in February, Real Sociedad are also in the hunt to sign the 24-times Norway international on a permanent deal.

Southampton are open to selling Elyounoussi in the summer for the right price as he is down the pecking order under Ralph Hasenhüttl.

The winger made an instant impact upon his arrival in Glasgow, scoring seven goals and providing six assists in 15 games before suffering a foot injury in November.

At that point, Celtic had conversations with Southampton about the cost of a permanent deal.

But the injury curtailed Elyounoussi’s impressive progress and he played only once between early November and February.

He had returned to full fitness before football’s suspension but had been unable to reclaim a regular starting spot.

The left winger has played 20 times in total for Celtic, scoring seven goals and providing six assists.

In other Celtic news, it can be REVEALED that a Hoops attacker has reached an agreement in principle to join a new club.
