Paul Robinson has tipped Tottenham Hotspur to offer Erik Lamela a new 18-month contract.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England goalkeeper insisted Lamela has been “underrated” during his time in north London.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealed last week the Argentine has no plans to leave the club despite interest from Serie A and Spurs have no plans to sell him.
Lamela’s current contract expires at the end of the season meaning he is currently free to negotiate a pre-contract deal with foreign clubs.
The 28-year-old has recently returned to action after spending six weeks on the sidelines with a calf injury.
Asked by Football Insider what he made of Lamela’s plans to stay at Tottenham, Robinson said: “I’m glad to hear that.
“He is a very good player and has been massively underrated during his time at the club. He has always performed well and contributed with goals and assists.
“He hasn’t got much time left on his contract but I would not be surprised if he did sign a new deal. He is only 28 so there is time left in him. There could be another 18-month deal offered to him.
“He is keeping Dele Alli and Harry Winks out of the team which says a lot. He is so versatile and very useful.”
Lamela has played 13 times across all competitions this season but has started just twice in the Premier League.
Since his arrival from Roma in 2013, the Argentina international has played 235 games for Tottenham across all competitions.
