Exclusive: Southampton open talks to sign Chelsea 21-year-old

Southampton have opened talks with Chelsea over signing midfielder Jacob Maddox, Football Insider can reveal.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are working on a deal for the 21-year-old as they look to reinforce their squad ahead of the window shutting tonight.

A Southampton source has told Football Insider that discussions are underway with the London giants over a last-gasp loan move for Maddox.

There is hope that Chelsea will be willing to let the attacking midfielder go as he is not a member of their first-team squad.

Maddox spent the first half of the season on loan at Tranmere Rovers.

However, it did not work out very well as he made just one appearance for the League One club and the deal was terminated at the start of this month.

Southampton have made their move for the rising star, who has been capped by England at Under-20 level, as the clock ticks down on deadline day.

Maddox, who turned 21 in November, is keen to join a side where he can regular playing time and develop his game.

He has previously had a successful loan in League Two with Cheltenham Town, where he was a consistent goal and assist maker during his 44 appearances.

Southampton have an excellent reputation for developing and improving young players over the last decade, although their once-fabled academy is not as prolific in terms of producing talent as it once was.

In other Southampton news, it can be REVEALED that the club are set to terminate the contract of international colossus.
