Middlesbrough are plotting an ambitious move to sign Tottenham defender Danny Rose by Friday evening, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The left-back, 30, is surplus to requirements at the north Londoners and is free to find a new club permanently or on loan during the domestic window.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Rose may now drop down a division in what would be a surprise move for an England international of such renown.
Spurs are open to loaning Rose out for the final year of his contract after struggling to secure the £5million fee they wanted during the main international window.
He held talks over a move to Italian outfit Genoa but the deal being discussed collapsed.
Boro could offer a new home for the controversial defender, who has previously played for their neighbours Newcastle United and Sunderland while on loan.
Newcastle cooled their interest in re-signing Rose earlier in the summer after he spent the second half of last season on loan at the club.
Rose has been frozen out at Tottenham and has not been given a squad number for this season.
The writing has been on the wall for him since the £28million signing of Sergio Reguilon, who has slotted in at left-back to compete with Ben Davies for a starting place in Jose Mourinho’s side.
Mourinho has said that he is “happy” for Rose to leave Tottenham and added that it would be “very good for him” to join Genoa.
The pair fell out last season over the long-serving left-back’s playing time, footage of which was shown in the Amazon documentary.
