Tottenham are closing in on a deal to sign Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger in a blockbuster deadline day move, Football Insider understands.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that negotiations between Tottenham and Chelsea are progressing well and that the north Londoners are confident of striking what could be a big-money deal for the 27-year-old before the 11pm deadline.

Jose Mourinho been in the market for a new centre-back all through the transfer window to help bolster the backline at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Portuguese boss has already added Matt Doherty and Sergio Reguilon to his ranks and is now hoping to secure a deal for Germany international Rudiger after their hopes of signing Skriniar collapsed.

Tottenham had tabled several bids for the Inter Milan defender but were unwilling to meet the Italian giants' £40million demands.

They have now turned their attentions to signing the Chelsea centre-back and are hopeful of striking a deal after his fall down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

Rudiger, who has 31 caps for Germany under his belt, played a total of 28 times for the Blues last season and finished the campaign as one of Frank Lampard's first-choice centre-backs.

However, he has featured in just one matchday squad this season after he was left as an unused substitute against Brighton on the opening day.
