Exclusive: Tottenham make move to sign 22-yr-old PL playmaker, ex-Spur reacts

Michael Brown has urged Tottenham to chase more experienced players as they set their sights on Norwich City playmaker Todd Cantwell.

The former Spurs and Leeds midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the Lilywhites need to chase proven talent if they are to challenge at the top of the Premier League.

As revealed by Football Insider, the Lilywhites have made enquiries over a potential deal for the 22-year-old as they ramp up their transfer plans ahead of the summer.

Brown insists that Cantwell ticks the boxes when it comes to Spurs’ ethos of buying young, exciting players but believes Mourinho needs more ready-made talent in the summer.

Asked about Spurs’ interest in Cantwell, Brown told Football Insider: “That’s the thing, it’s always that young player with value.

“I said it last summer, are there going to be some more senior, ready replacements that can go and challenge for the top of the league, rather than the young, up-and-coming player where you create the value?

“He’s certainly one to improve but I think they need some players as well, like a £50million signing, somebody who’s very, very senior to try and take them on. Mourinho might be looking to do that a little bit more.

“Obviously he will be wanting to fit that bill, you’d expect that.”

Cantwell has been a standout performer for Norwich this season, scoring six goals and setting up a further two in 29 Premier League appearances.

However, with the season suspended, the Canaries sit bottom of the table, six points adrift of safety.

In other Tottenham news, Paul Robinson has told the club to accept a “brilliant” offer for an “outstanding” first-team player.
