Exclusive: Tottenham set sights on signing Bundesliga star who's keen to move

Tottenham have joined Premier League big guns in the chase for Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie, Football Insider can reveal.

The USA international is expected to leave the Bundesliga outfit this summer due to their financial problems.

A Spurs source has told Football Insider that Jose Mourinho is an admirer of the all-action midfielder and is keen to lure him to north London.

McKennie is understood to be keen on a move to the Premier League.

He has been linked with other leading English clubs, while the source explained there is also interest from Inter Milan and Hertha Berlin.

McKennie is a versatile operator who plays predominantly in central midfield but can also operate at centre-back, as he did at the end of last year due to an injury crisis.

He is a mainstay of the Schalke XI and started 24 of their 34 Bundesliga matches in the recently-completed campaign.

Since signing from MLS outfit FC Dallas in 2016, the USA international has made 91 appearances for the German club.

McKennie signed a new contract last summer that runs until the summer of 2024.

It has been reported elsewhere that Schalke are seeking a £27million fee for him in the upcoming window.
