Exclusive: Unai Emery stunned by Jhon Duran's Aston Villa transformation

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery and his backroom staff have changed their minds on Jhon Duran following his remarkable transformation, sources have told Football Insider.

The 20-year-old has won them over with his performances this season after scoring five goals in eight games across all competitions.

Villa had been willing to sell Duran during the summer as well as in January of this year because he had struggled to adapt to Emery’s strict methods following his arrival at the start of 2023.

Football Insider revealed that the Colombia international had agreed personal terms with West Ham, but the Irons were ultimately unwilling to meet Villa’s £35million asking price, and he also came close to joining Chelsea.

Duran has had issues with his timekeeping during his Villa career, and sources have told Football Insider that he’s a “handful” behind the scenes.

Despite that, Villa have been convinced he’s worth the trouble and that has coincided with his scintillating start to the season.

Aston Villa are ready to keep Jhon Duran moving forward

Duran has yet to start a Premier League game this season but has proven himself to be a huge impact-maker off the bench.

The striker has scored four goals in the league this season, two of which were late winners that earned the club three points.

Football Insider revealed that Villa knocked back offers from 40 clubs during the summer transfer window, opting to back him despite his difficulties.

Duran was unable to make the difference against Ipswich Town when he came on for the final 26 minutes as the two teams drew 2-2.

Emery’s side will be back in action on Wednesday (2 October) against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
