Exclusive: Watford open talks to sign Newcastle star Longstaff
Watford have opened talks with Newcastle United over a deal for midfielder Matty Longstaff ahead of tomorrow’s cut-off, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The 20-year-old could be set to leave St. James’ Park on a temporary basis in search of regular first team football.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that the Championship club are in talks over a transfer which could see the midfielder move to Vicarage Road on loan for the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign.
Longstaff has made five Premier League appearances this season – his last start came in the 3-0 defeat against Arsenal earlier this month.
The centre-midfielder has scored three goals in 20 appearances for the Magpies since his debut in August 2019.
A product of Newcastle’s academy, Longstaff put pen to paper on a new two-year contract last year.
He was heavily linked with a move to Udinese in the summer but opted to remain at his boyhood club despite a lucrative contract offer from the Serie A side.
The move could pave the way for Steve Bruce to add a midfielder to his squad before Monday night’s deadline.
Sky Sports‘ Keith Downie claims the club have made an enquiry for Celtic’s Olivier Ntcham with a view to a loan move.
Football Insider understands that the Hoops have given the French midfielder the green light to leave Parkhead this month.
Hamza Choudhoury also appears to be of interest to Newcastle after Steve Bruce revealed that the Leicester City 23-year-old is a player “liked” by his staff.
In other news, Manchester United have put a block on one of their first team players leaving the club amid interest from Newcastle United.
