West Brom are ready to join the English big guns keen on signing Rangers defender Connor Goldson, Football Insider has learned.

The Championship promotion favourites are setting their sights on the centre-back, 27, as a target for this month or, more realistically, in the summer.

A West Brom source has told Football Insider that Goldson has come to the attention of their scouting network for the consistency of his performances at rejuvenated Rangers.

Slaven Bilic's side are in the market for proven central defenders they regard as capable of playing at the top of the Championship or in the Premier League if they were to get there.

This comes after Football Insider revealed earlier last week that Fulham are plotting a move to sign Goldson this month, while Leeds United are monitoring him more likely for the summer.

Rangers face a battle to hang on to the commanding 6ft 3in leader of their defence, who has been one of the mainstays of Gerrard's title-chasing side in Scotland.

The manager rates Goldson so highly he has started him in almost every match since he took charge at Ibrox despite having three other senior centre-backs to choose from, all of whom he also signed.

Goldson has proved excellent value for the £3million paid to Brighton in the summer of 2018.

He has played a remarkable 90 matches in just a season-and-a-half and his consistency has been as impressive as his availability.

In the current campaign, Goldson has made 36 appearances, all of which have been starts.
