Noel Whelan has urged Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to pick Everton over Tottenham this summer if he decides to leave St. Mary’s.
The former Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 24-year-old could come in to replace Morgan Schneiderlin who has “not done enough” this season.
The Athletic claim that the Toffees are interested in signing the Denmark international but may face competition from Spurs once the transfer landscape becomes clear.
Hojbjerg averages the most ball recoveries per 90 minutes in the division this season having been present for all but one Premier League.
Southampton’s captain would likely be available at a reasonable price this summer as he prepares to enter the final 12-months of his contract on the south coast.
When asked by Football Insider if Spurs or the Toffees would be the better fit for the holding midfielder, Whelan said: “They are both desirable football clubs.
“Everton are very up and coming now. Ancelotti will have a full pre-season ahead of next year, so they will be exciting. Who does not want to work under him?
“Everton would be a better option because there are players there such as Morgan Schneiderlin who will be moved on.
“He has not done enough and Ancelotti has had enough time to look at players now. He knows who he wants at the football club.”
Football Insider revealed earlier this month that Ancelotti had given the green light for Schneiderlin, 30, to be sold for just £5million.
The French midfielder has only made 18 appearances so far this campaign, having featured predominantly as a substitute.
