Exclusive: Whelan claims Leeds may convert forward into wing-back after £3m rival bid tabled
Noel Whelan claims Leeds United could sign QPR forward Bright Osayi-Samuel this summer – and turn him into a wing-back.
The former Whites and Coventry striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, does not believe Marcelo Bielsa needs more wingers but suggested the 22-year-old could be used in an advanced defensive role as United.
Osayi-Samuel, who can play on the right or left flank, has been one of Queens Park Rangers’ standout performers this season.
The Nigerian has six goals and eight assists to date this season, including three goal contributions in his last two appearances.
As revealed by Football Insider on Friday, Leeds have been keeping a close eye on the attacker this season and are targeting a summer move.
When asked by Football Insider if it is a position where he feels Leeds need to strengthen, Whelan said: “I saw him play a couple of times and his progression has been very good.

“He has loads of pace and there is a fantastic winger there but I am not so sure we need more wingers. At the right price possibly.
“He could play that wing-back role as well and Leeds will look at that because Marcelo Bielsa likes players that can play multiple positions. He has the athleticism to play that right wing-back role. He is really quick and has pace to burn.
“They rate him very highly at QPR and he was finishing the season strongly.”
QPR have rejected a £3million bid from Belgian side Club Brugge for Osayi-Samuel, Mark Warburton’s side holding out for a higher price.
However, the winger is not expected to command an astronomical fee with his contract expiring in June 2021 and transfer fees to be significantly reduced amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that fans’ favourite is keen to sign a long-term deal at Elland Road.
