Noel Whelan heaped praise on Leeds United youngster Jordan Stevens following his appearance in the 2-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the ex-Leeds striker admitted it was great to see Stevens get an opportunity before raving about the teenager’s ability.

The 19-year-old midfielder has featured twice in the Championship for Marcelo Bielsa’s this season as not only did he feature against the Owls on Saturday but he previously played a part in the loss to Fulham.

Whelan explained that he thought Stevens was benefiting from Jack Clarke exiting the club as he stated that the 19-year-old seems to have picked up where the Tottenham attacker left off.

When asked about Steven’s cameo appearance and how bright his future looks, Whelan told Football Insider: “Yeah look it’s great to see these young lads getting a go.

“He looked very composed when he came on, got a great touch, great vision, likes to link up on that right-hand side.

“He’s the player who has taken over from Jack Clarke, so yeah it seems like for like, he looks lively, great bit of pace and he likes to link up in wide areas.

“So it was great to see him get that opportunity.”

Stevens arrived at Elland Road after joining Leeds from Forest Green in 2018 after making 15 appearances for the League Two side.

The 19-year-old previously hit the headlines while at Leeds as he was given a six-week ban earlier in the season for breaking the Football Associations betting rules.
