Noel Whelan heaped praise on Leeds United attacker Tyler Roberts and claimed he poses a different kind of threat compared to Mateusz Klich.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Whites forward heaped praise on Roberts as he claimed he has looked fantastic when deployed in midfield this season.
The 20-year-old has been sparingly-used by Marcelo Bielsa this season as he has only played 106 minutes across the five Championship appearances he has made.
Whelan when weighing up who could replace Klich in the team as he has been struggling for form this season, revealed that Roberts was a contender to take the Poland international’s first-team spot.
The former Leeds attacker pointed out that Roberts had more pace and defended more than Klich and stated that the Wales international was also great with the ball at his feet.
“Now you’ve got Tyler Roberts who I think has been looking fantastic in that position, he poses a different kind of threat, he has a little more pace about him, he is great with the ball at his feet and he defends more,” Whelan told Football Insider.
Roberts saw the start of his season disrupted by a long-term injury and even admitted that during a post-match interview after the win against Birmingham City that he was just glad to be playing again after a long summer.
The 20-year-old has been at Elland Road since January 2018 after joining from West Bromwich Albion and he has made a total of 36 appearances for the Whites.
Roberts, who can play on the wing, as a No.10 and as a centre-forward, has so far only managed three goals and six assists for the Championship club.
The Wales international is contracted to stay at Leeds until 2022 as he signed a four-and-a-half-year deal upon joining the club.
