Noel Whelan has been left raving after young defender Oliver Casey penned a new long-term contract at Leeds United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds striker and boyhood fan of the Whites insists that the teenage centre-back is one for fans to watch in the future.

Leeds confirmed last week that the 19-year-old had put pen to paper on a new three-year contract in what is his second professional deal at Elland Road.

Whelan admits Casey has caught the eye when watching the club’s under-23s this season and that it is fantastic Leeds have managed to tie him down.

Whelan told Football Insider: “I think it’s great that the club, before the end of the season, are now getting these contracts sorted for these up and coming stars at Elland Road.

“We’ve seen bits of him over the past couple of years, I’ve seen lots of him for the under-23s, he’s a very good defender and it’s nice to see they’re getting rewarded for the hard work they’re putting in.

“Look, it’s going to be a long haul because they’re going to have to compete against top-class defenders now that are already in the side and maybe more that come into Leeds United in the summer.

“However, he’s got a really good future and Leeds United have recognised that and penned him down to three years.”

Casey has played just once for the first team at Elland Road, although he has been a regular on the substitutes’ bench in recent weeks.

He has had the likes of captain Liam Cooper and loan star Ben White to compete with for playing time this season.

In other Leeds United news, Alan Hutton has been left devastated by some “absolutely horrible” news coming out of Elland Road.
