Expert backs Gomez to sign for Aston Villa amid '£20m' claim

It would be a “good move” for Joe Gomez if he swaps Liverpool for Aston Villa, according to Alex McLeish.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Villa and Scotland manager suggested it would take a bid of at least £20million for Liverpool to sell the centre-back.

Gregg Evans of the Athletic reported on Wednesday (22 December) is the Premier League and Champions League winner is admired by Aston Villa as they prioritise the signing of a centre-back.

Steven Gerrard’s current options are Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Kortney Hause and Axel Tunazebe.

Hause is only under contract until the end of the season but Villa have an option to extend that by a further year while Tuanzebe is on a season-long loan from Man United.

“It would be a good move,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Steven probably knows quite a bit about the guy. I’m sure he’ll have seen Gomez in action many, many times.

“The question is, he’s going to cost a fair bit and I’m not sure they’ll do Steven any favours in terms of transfer fees.

“He’d probably still cost over £20million but these are at the levels we’re at these days.

“Gomez is probably at the moment in his career where he needs to play every single game or most of the games in a season. He’s got to think about his own future too.

“Villa are an emerging club, they’ve spent a hell of a lot of money over the past few seasons and will want to keep on improving.

“Gomez wants to keep improving as well. He’s not going to do that by sitting on the bench or maybe getting in the Liverpool team every five or 10 games.

“At the age that Joe is at now, he wants to be playing every week.”

In other news, six clubs have made moves to sign an Aston Villa player made available for a January move.
