Expert hits out at Chris Wood after new development at Newcastle United

Noel Whelan has claimed relying on Chris Wood would “diminish” Newcastle United’s attacking “threat” amid injuries to Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Isak’s injury problem could just be a “niggle” after he stepped away from international duty of his own accord.

Isak withdrew from the Sweden squad on Thursday (22 September) after being deemed not fit enough to participate in their games against Serbia and Slovenia.

Meanwhile, Wilson hasn’t featured for Newcastle since 21 August after sustaining a hamstring injury – but has reassured fans that he will be back “soon”.

Wood joined Newcastle in January for a reported £25million but has scored just two league goals in 24 outings for the Tyneside club.

He has started just one Premier League game this term.

Whelan claimed Newcastle will be monitoring the fitness of Isak closely in the build-up to their return to action against Fulham next week (1 October).

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s a big blow just after scoring another big Premier League goal.

“You’re just hoping that these players come back healthy, and if he’s just stepped away from the international scene it may just be a niggle.

“Newcastle will be monitoring him closely during the final days of this international break.

“Wilson and Isak both out now – they’re the top of the pile for Newcastle.

“No disrespect, you’ve got Chris Wood in reserve – and he’s not started in the same way as those two.

“It would diminish their threat going forward. Eddie Howe will be sitting with his fingers crossed that it’s not a serious injury.”
