Expert: Newcastle United to announce signing of Southampton sensation in 'coming days'

Newcastle United will announce the signing of a Southampton youth star in the coming days.

That is according to Spurs insider and youth football expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Newcastle have already been busy in the summer transfer market, signing Matt Targett and Nick Pope.

The club also announced on Tuesday (28 June) that a deal has been agreed in principle for 22-year-old Lille defender Sven Botman.

The Magpies have also added to their youth ranks in what is a major departure from the policies put in place by previous owner Mike Ashley.

Wenham has heard from his sources in the game that Newcastle will be announcing the signing of one of Southampton’s top young stars before the end of the week.

“I don’t know the name but I know Newcastle have picked up a 16-year-old Southampton boy on £6,500-per-week,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“That’s fairly interesting because it shows the club are developing away from the first team and investing in the academy.

“I think the announcement will come in the coming days, before the end of the week.

“On that money, now, over a three-year deal, that’s £1million. On that money, you have made it, regardless of what you do in the game.

Newcastle have already announced the signing of Galway’s Alex Murphy, 18, this summer.

The Athletic have also reported (17 June) terms have been agreed over the transfer of Kilmarnock centre-back Charlie McArthur, 17.
