Expert slams Newcastle United transfer blunder after Allan Saint-Maximin update

Newcastle United should have signed a winger before the transfer window closed.

That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpirs’ attacking options.

Newcastle have only won one Premier League game this season and most recently drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace on Saturday (3 September).

Ryan Fraser and Miguel Almiron, who scored two league goals collectively last season, started against the Eagles as Allan Saint-Maximin missed the game through injury,

Newcastle were busy in the summer transfer window but Alexander Isak was their only attacking arrival.

McLeish claims Newcastle will rue not signing a new winger.

“I think maybe a winger, they don’t have too much depth there,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“Well, they have depth but there isn’t a lot of quality once someone like Saint-Maximin gets injured.

“I’m sure they tried, we know they have the resources. Maybe Isak can play out wide but he’s going to play through the middle while Wilson is out.

“It’s a funny one, I just think they will rue not getting a winger in as the season goes on because we know what is going to happen with injuries.”

On Friday (2 September) Howe revealed Saint-Maximin will more than likely be fit for Newcastle United’s next Premier League game against West Ham on Sunday (11 November).

The attacker has scored once and registered two assists already this term.
