Alex Bruce has urged David Moyes to take advantage of any swap offers Chelsea make to sign Declan Rice from West Ham this summer.
The former Premier League defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believe that the Irons need significant reinforcements this summer after a disappointing season in which they have battled relegation.
West Ham are understandably reluctant to sell Rice this summer but know they face a battle to keep the 21-year-old in east London if a top club come calling.
Bruce believes a part-exchange would soften the blow of the midfielder’s departure and has urged Moyes to consider negotiating a swap deal.
“One thing’s for sure, West Ham do need to improve their squad,” Bruce told Football Insider.
“I believe they should be looking towards the top half of the table rather than looking over their shoulders all the time and to do that they need to improve the team, it’s as simple as that.
“I think they’ve flirted with relegation for the past few years and next year they want to be looking to have more of a comfortable season and to do that you need to strengthen your squad.
“If you can bring in proven Premier League players, like the names that have been mentioned (Zouma, Batshuayi, Tomori) and bring in a couple or three and throw them in as part of a deal for Declan Rice.
“If it’s going to improve the squad, you’re going to have to face facts and lose one of your best players because he wants to go onto bigger and better things, it might not be a bad idea.”
