Noel Whelan heaped praise on Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla following his performance in the 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Leeds attacker was full of praise for Casilla’s latest display and pointed out that the keeper had to make a few critical stops to keep his clean sheet intact.
The 33-year-old keeper has kept eight clean sheets while conceding just 10 goals in his opening 16 appearances of the season for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Whelan complimented Casilla’s decision making, especially when it came to tipping the ball over the bar in the first half, and also praised the fact that the shot-stopper kept fully focused on the game despite there being periods where he didn’t have much to do.
“Yeah I thought his display on Saturday was fantastic, he didn’t have too much to do but when he needed to be called upon he delivered, he made fantastic reaction saves,” Whelan told Football Insider.
“I think in the first-half, there was a fantastic save where he tipped it over the bar, and sometimes you have to do that when the weather is like that and the game is scrappy, and this is where it’s so good to have a very good keeper in between the sticks and his concentration levels had to be at maximum.
“And that save wasn’t the only one of the game that was critical either.”
Casilla joined Leeds in January 2019 from Real Madrid on a free transfer and is contracted to stay at Elland Road until 2023.
The experienced keeper has made a grand total of 35 appearances for the Whites since joining and has only conceded 32 goals overall.
