Tottenham have been given a boost in their pursuit of Georginio Wijnaldum, according to a report.

The Mirror claim Spurs are in pole position to sign the Newcastle attacking midfielder ahead of Everton as he would prefer a move to London.

It is said Newcastle have slapped Wijnaldum with a £25million asking price amid interest in the player from a number of major European clubs.

Wijnaldum joined Newcastle last summer from PSV Eindhoven for a fee of £14.5million but he has made it clear he wants to leave following relegation to the Championship.

The Telegraph claim that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has set his sights on the goalscoring midfielder after taking care of the defensive side of his midfield with the acquisition last month of Victor Wanyama.

Wijnaldum, 25, was a shining light in a wretched Premier League campaign for the North-East club, scoring 11 goals in the competition.

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez now faces a fight to keep his star player as the club look for instant promotion back to the Premier League.

The news of Wijnaldum's departure will be regarded as a blow to many Newcastle supporters but star man Ayoze Perez insisted he has no intentions of leaving the club.
