Ipswich Town have opened talks with manager Paul Lambert over a new contract, Football Insider can reveal.

Lambert has guided Ipswich to the top of League One this season and they are currently four points clear at the top.

An Ipswich source has told Football Insider the club are keen to reward the former Norwich and Aston Villa manager with a new and improved deal for transforming the club's fortunes this campaign.

Lambert, 50, has just over 18 months to run on his current deal at Portman Road.

The Glaswegian took charge of Ipswich last October after replacing Paul Hurst.

He was unable to prevent the club from suffering relegation from the Championship but has spearheaded a revival in England's third tier.

Lambert oversaw a major overhaul at the club during the summer and the response has been a promotion challenge that has left the Tractor Boys the only unbeaten side in League One.

Lambert boasts a wealth of managerial experience having had spells at Livingston, Wycombe Wanderers, Colchester United, Norwich City, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Wolves and Stoke City before his arrival at Ipswich.

Ipswich are next in action when they travel to 18th placed Accrington Stanley on Sunday of next week.

The Suffolk side went into the international break with 27 points from 11 matches, which include eight wins and three draws.
