Leeds United's midfield is lacking the defensive steel that saw them come within a whisker of qualifying for the Championship play-off spots last season.

In the summer, Paul Heckingbottom must work alongside Victor Orta to right a wrong that was made last year when Leeds decided to cash in on Liam Bridcutt.

The 28-year-old enforcer was sold to Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £1million but now his place at the City Ground is under great threat with him not making a single appearance since mid-January.

Forest legend Kenny Burns has claimed that Bridcutt may be transferred away from the East Midlands club in the summer - so Leeds must do their best to re-sign the two-times Scotland international who they should not have really sold in the first place.

Although he is young, Ronaldo Vieira has shown that he is not quite ready to fill the shoes of being Leeds' go-to ball-winning midfielder.

Eunan O'Kane and Kalvin Phillips' partnership in the centre of midfield looked promising at first earlier this season, but they are way too frail and offer little support to the back-line.

Bridcutt was quality for Leeds towards the back end of last season and has the leadership abilities that Heckingbottom's side also lacks.

Raiding Championship rivals Forest for Bridcutt would be a smart piece of business in the summer, but then again, Orta does not appear to be the man to admit he is wrong be re-signing a player he sold.
