Lewis O'Brien has a release clause inserted in his new Huddersfield Town contract after multiple Leeds United bids, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Championship club announced last month that O'Brien has signed a new four-year contract after four confirmed Leeds offers during the summer.

A Huddersfield source has told Football Insider that the new deal includes a £10million release clause.

Intriguingly, that is less than the highest bid made by United, who made extensive attempts during the recent transfer window to lure O'Brien to Elland Road.

Huddersfield chairman Phil Hodgkinson has revealed he rejected a series of bids from Leeds culminating in a package worth £13m in total.

But he explained to the BBC and Yorkshire Live that the main issue was the structure of the final bid, including how much of the cash was guaranteed and how much was made up performance-related add-ons.

O'Brien's camp insisted upon the clause during negotiations for his new contract, which runs until 2025.

It is common for in-demand players to have release clauses in their contract, and for these to be activated at specific times and for a specific amount of cash.

Football Insider first broke the news on 30th July that United were in preliminary talks to sign the midfielder and revealed on 21 September that he had agreed a new contract.

O'Brien was very keen to link up with Marcelo Bielsa's side but has put his disappointment to one side to play a key role for Huddersfield.

He has made 10 appearances for Town this season, starting eight of their last Championship matches in succession.
