Pep Guardiola could quit Man City in weeks as new contract details emerge - pundit
Noel Whelan has claimed Pep Guardiola could consider departing Man City if they win the Champions League in the next two seasons - despite signing a new deal until 2025.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested European triumph would make the 51-year-old the best manager in City's history.
The Premier League champions confirmed on Wednesday (23 November) that Guardiola has signed a two-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2025.
The Guardian updated later that day to claim the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss has received a rise on his previous £20million-a-year salary.
Guardiola has won every domestic trophy on offer in England but is yet to taste European success at the Etihad Stadium - losing 1-0 in the Champions League final against Chelsea last year (2021).
He has taken charge of the second-most matches in the Citizens' history - and unsurprisingly holds the best win percentage of all his predecessors.
When asked if Guardiola is holding out on a Champions League win before signing off at Man City, Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s possible.
“Signing a short-term contract like that, it would be interesting to see what he does if they were to win the Champions League in the next two seasons – he could choose to walk away.
“It’s the only trophy he still has to win.
“He’s still building a really good, young team at Man City. He’s brought in Haaland, Phillips, Alvarez.
“He knows they aren’t quite the finished article yet, but they’ve got a really good chance this season.
“It’s a trophy which would really set him apart from all the other managers who have been at Man City.”
