Newcastle must bolster their options in the final third by rivalling Reading in their reported pursuit of Huddersfield striker Nahki Wells this summer.

Guardian reporter Ed Aarons claimed on his personal Twitter account that the striker is set to be the subject of a £10million offer from Championship promotion hopefuls Reading.

Wells has developed a reputation in the Championship for his ability to regularly find the back of the net, but struggled to do that as much as he has done in the past last season.

Scoring 10 times in 43 games, Wells also provided three assists but it seems that has not put off Jaap Stam's Reading who are willing to table an eight-figure offer for the Bermuda international.

Wells is yet to make a Premier League appearance but his constant goalscoring form in the Championship would suggest that the speed machine would thrive in the top tier, if given the chance.

Football Insider considers three ways in which Newcastle would take a giant step towards Premier League safety by signing Wells, including how the future of this senior star is in doubt:

Move to suit all parties

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez looks on from the touchline

With Wells having less than 12 months remaining on his current contract, Huddersfield will be keen to push through a deal to sell the attacker now rather than next summer.

Wells will be allowed to leave on a free and if they can receive £10million for his services now, they will be keen to cash in and any move for Wells will therefore be a swift one.

That will see the Toon complete a deal to sign Wells in smart fashion, potentially before their opening match against Tottenham on August 2013 if they do make a move.

Replica of Gayle

Wells is known for his explosive pace, ability to get in between the centre-backs and find the back of the net on a regular basis.

Similar in physical stance and aerial prowess to Gayle, Wells would be the perfect back-up to the former Crystal Palace forward as Benitez would not have to tinker his side tactically.

The Toon side will be used to adhering to Gayle's strengths in the final third and bringing Wells to Tyneside would see the Toon give themselves a like-for-like replacement.

Loss of Murphy, future of Mitrovic?

Newcastle need to sign a striker this summer after selling Daryl Murphy to Championship side Nottingham Forest and the future of Aleksander Mitrovic in doubt.

The Evening Chronicle claim Serbia international Mitrovic, 22, is available for £16million this summer with Lyon and a handful of Turkish sides keen.

If the fan favourite joins Murphy in leaving, Newcastle will need a striker to replace the duo and Wells can be that man.
