Tottenham are ready to re-open contract talks with Toby Alderweireld in a fresh bid to keep him at the club beyond this summer, Football Insider understands.

The Belgium international, 30, has a £26million release clause in his current deal which can be activated from the start of the forthcoming transfer window.

Alderweireld had appeared all but certain to quit this summer after negotiations over a long-term extension collapsed at the start of last year, with the club unwilling to match the player's salary demands.

But a Spurs source has told Football Insider that the club have not given up hope of holding on to the centre-back and are willing to return to the negotiating table to thrash out a long-term deal.

Alderweireld has enjoyed a revival this season after slipping down the pecking order in the second half of the last campaign in the immediate wake of his contract stalemate.

He has made 42 appearances in all competitions, including 41 starts, and delivered a lion-hearted display at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night in the face of a magnificent Manchester City attacking performance to secure Spurs' place in the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time.

Manchester United and Juventus are among the clubs who have registered an interest in signing Alderweireld if he cannot agree a new deal with Tottenham.
