Man United "massively overpaid" for players in the summer transfer window, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Spurs and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Red Devils invested too heavily in Casemiro, 30, and Antony, 22.

Erik ten Hag's side made six signings in the summer transfer window, with Casemiro, Antony, Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, Martin Dubravka and Christian Eriksen arriving for a fee north of £200million.

According to a study from CIES Football Observatory (19 September), United have overpaid on transfers by £208million since July 2012.

No Premier League club has overpaid more than the Red Devils.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on United's approach in the market this summer, Robinson said: "It was a scattergun approach from them once again.

"I think Casemiro is a great player and will be for the next couple of years but in a few years time United will have a 33-year-old on £350,000-a-week. That is draining the club of resources.

"Make no doubt about it, United have been held to ransom over the transfers of Casemiro and Antony.

Man United

"I covered the Eredivisie a lot last year. Antony is a great player but his output in terms of goals and assists has never been that good. He is in no way an £85million player.

"United got held to ransom because of the situation they found themselves in. They massively overpaid for players in the summer. The thing is, they still need more."
