Gary Cahill is weighing up offers from Southampton and Bournemouth as Rangers face losing out in transfer race, Football Insider has learned.

The former England defender, 35, is mulling over his options after being released by Crystal Palace at the end of June.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Southampton have offered Cahill a one-year deal worth up to £35,000-a-week.

This compares to a two-year deal offered by Hampshire rivals Bournemouth that is worth up to £20,000-a-week.

Rangers also registered their interest in Cahill earlier in the window but can’t match the Saints offer following their Champions League exit.

The Gers crashed out of the competition after losing 2-1 to 10-man Malmo at Ibrox last week.

Steven Gerrard admitted after the game, via BBC Sport, the financial implications of the result could see him sell players.

Cahill is a player well known to the Ibrox boss after the two played together for England.

There remains some uncertainty over Connor Goldson's long-term future with his current contract expiring next summer.

However, Football Insider learned at the beginning of July that the club are confident are securing him to a new deal.

Meanwhile, Southampton are in the market for a new centre-back after selling Jannik Vestergaard to Premier League rivals Leicester City.

Cahill would offer Ralph Hassenhutl vast experience having played 394 English top-flight games across spells with Aston Villa, Bolton Wanderers, Chelsea and Palace.

He played 20 times in the league for the south London club last season as they finished 13th.
